Determined to make it a game. Argyle proceeded to burn the first four minutes and 10 seconds of the final period with a drive that ended with a 4 yard outside run for a score. The lead was cut to 13, 34-21 Wimberley.
Looking to salt away clock, Wimberley abandoned the passing game that built their huge lead. In doing so, the Texans went three and out and punted. Argyle took over at their own 33 with 6:50 remaining in the game. Fans were reciting the line from Dumb and Dumber, “so you’re saying there’s a chance!”
Argyle looked to be driving but, that slowed and left them facing a fourth and six at the Texan 44. With punting no longer and option, they elected to go for the long conversion. Coach Rodger dialed up a 12 yard screen pass that gave them new life and a first down. The crucial fourth down conversion paid huge dividends as a few plays later Argyle scored again, making it 34-28 Wimberley with three minutes remaining in the game.
Down by only six points, Argyle attempted an on sidekick. When the pile was uncovered there was Wimberley holding the ball. In addition however, a yellow flag indicated a penalty. A personal foul against Wimberley backed them up to start what they hoped would be the game ending drive.
Still wanting to burn the clock, Wimberley opened the drive with a 23 yard outside run. A 31 yard run marked their second straight big play and saw Wimberley with the ball at the Argyle 21 with 1:30 to go. After missing a 23 yard field goal three plays later, Wimberley gave the ball over to Argyle at their own six with one minute to go.
Argyle managed to drive the ball to the Wimberley 36 but ran out of time, losing 34-28. In the end, this game ended up being only a 6 point victory and could have gone either way. Argyle finished with 90 yards in penalties while Wimberley had 60. Wimberley led the way with Big Play 8-6.
