Friday Night Legends
Friday Night Legends is a football board game that uses actual team statistics, play calling and some luck to determine the outcome – kind of like real life! In this series, we will take some of these great teams we have compiled and give you a write-up of how the two played using Friday Night Legends.
1996 Austin Westlake Chaparrals (16-0) vs 2011 Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers (14-1)
The Westlake Chaps won the Class 5A State Championship in 1996 behind future NFL quarterback Drew Brees. They beat every opponent by double-digits and topped 40 points 11 times. Westlake went 28–0–1 when Brees started for two seasons. They scored 41 ppg and only gave up 12.
The Lake Travis Cavaliers won their 5th consecutive state championship in 2011. They were led by Heisman winner Baker Mayfield who was in his Junior season. Other than 2 close games against Cedar Park, their closest game was the 15 point win the championship game against Waco Hewitt Midway. They scored 45 ppg and only gave up 14.
Both defenses were tough to start out as both offenses went 3 and out and punted. Lake Travis threw an interception on their 2nd possession and Westlake was set up with the ball at the Cavalier 48 yard line. They got a 25 yard run down to the 2 and scored on a pass play from there to take a 7-0 lead. LT started their drive at own 11 and got a few first downs but had to punt. On their first play Westlake threw and interception and Travis returned it to the Chaparral 23. They were able to run it in from there scoring on a 11 yard run to tie the score at 7. Westlake went 3 and out and Travis began their drive at their own 39. After 2 plays the quarter ended all tied up at 7.
Westlake 7 vs Lake Travis 7
LT was forced to punt and got a booming 52 yarder and Westlake took over at their own 9. On their first play, Lake Travis got a big play and intercepted the ball and returned it to the Westlake 17. The Cavaliers were stopped at the 4 yard line and had to settle for a field goal that they almost missed. Lake Travis now led 10-7. The Chaps then got things going offensively and went on a 86 yard drive. They scored on a 17 yard pass to take the lead 14-10. LT had a good drive using the running game but had to punt from the Westlake 39 yard line. Westlake took over at their own 20 with 2:10 left. They were able to to get to the LT 40 but turned the ball over on down. The half ended with the Chaps up 14-10.
Westlake 14 vs Lake Travis 10
Westlake got a big kickoff return to start the 2nd half and start their first drive at the LT 45. They were able to get the touchdown with a 15 yard run to extend their lead to 21-10. Their drive was helped when LT jumped offsides on a 4th and 4 as Westlake was punting. Travis gets a big Kickoff return of their own and start their first drive at their 48. They were unable to do anything with the ball and punted. They were able to pin Westlake back at their own 12 though. The Chaps went 3 and out and Cavs got the ball at the Westlake 47. They made it to the 16 and tried a field goal but the kick was blocked!! The LT defense held and they got a good punt return to start their next drive at their own 31. The quarter comes to an end with LT driving.
Westlake 21 vs Lake Travis 10
Lake Travis was able to complete an almost 5 minute drive and run it in from 7 yards out to make the score 21-17. Westlake took over with 8:10 left in the game. Their first 2 plays of the drives were big runs totaling 48 yards. They made it to the LT 10 before the drive stalled and they kicked a field goal to extend their lead to 24-17. The Cavaliers took over with 4:50 remaining. Their first play was a 35 yard run that they fumbled but was fortunate enough to recover. They now had it at the Westlake 47 yard line but was not able to do anything and had to punt. The Chaps took over at their own 20 with 3 minutes left. Westlake faced a 3rd and 2 and was able to pick up a first down with a 3 yard run. Two plays later a big LT hit caused a fumble but it was recovered by the Chaps. Travis was able to force a punt and got the ball back at their own 38 with 40 seconds left and only 1 time out remaining. LT was able to get the ball into Westlake territory but the Chaparral defense got a sack on the last play of the game.
